Announcing 2017-2018 Psychology Scholarship Recipients
Thu, 09/28/2017 - 11:47amThree Psychology students are receiving scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year administered by the Psychology Department.
Ardajah Alexander is the winner of the Aline Mitchel Garrett Memorial Psychology Scholarship. Ardajah Alexander is a senior psychology major from Lafayette, LA. She is the president of Psychology Colloquium, the vice president of community service of Sigma Alpha Lambda, and a member of Psi Chi. Last year, she dedicated more than 500 hours of community service through the UL Lafayette AmeriCorps program, assisting in various projects including Rebuilding Together and the Cinderella Project which provided free prom dresses to low-income high school students). Ardajah hopes to attend the PsyD program in Clinical Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology at Xavier University.
Hannah Steinmetz is the winner of the Psychology Faculty Merit Scholarship. Hannah Steinmetz is a junior at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, pursuing a bachelors degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice. She currently holds leadership positions with NAMI on Campus at UL Lafayette and UL Psychology Colloquium. Service has always been an important to Hannah, and she has worked with non-profit organizations in Acadiana through school and church groups from the time of middle school. She is from Lafayette and plans to stay in Louisiana to pursue an advanced degree. Eventually, she hopes to do research and work in public health programs in Louisiana. Her main interest concerns the correlation between socioeconomic status and access to healthcare, education, housing, and other basic necessities. Another interest is the link between a parent/guardian's socio-economic status and developmental delays/issues in their child/children. Ultimately, she would like to not only do research on these topics, but implement programs to help individuals who are dealing with similar issues based on the findings of the research. For graduate school, she is interested in the LSU Schools of Public Health in New Orleans.
Alexis Mayeux is the winner of the Emily "Mae Mae" LeBlanc Badeaux Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Alexis “Lexi” Mayeux is a second-year graduate student in Psychology, from Mansura, Louisiana. She previously earned her B.S. in Psychology from UL Lafayette in 2015. Her thesis research is on implications for early childhood divorce on young-adult adjustment. Lexi interns at Counseling and Testing of UL and works for the Woman's Foundation of Lafayette as a community education coordinator. After obtaining her master’s degree, Lexi hopes to pursue a PhD in Counseling Psychology, and ultimately wants to spend her career providing mental health services in rural areas or other areas with limited psychological health resources.
