Psychology Pre-Med Requirements

In addition to meeting all of the requirements for the Psychology Major, students in the Pre-Med concentration must complete a number of science courses: 3 semesters of Biology (with labs), 5 semesters of Chemisty (with labs), 3-4 semesters of Physics, and an additional trigonometry-based Math class. Students will Minor in Chemistry, which offers the most direct path to fulfilling all medical school requirements and meeting specific minor requirements. The curriculum requires 130-133 credit hours to complete.

Note that all critical courses must be completed before students can take the MCAT exam, which should be taken during the summer between a student's junior and senior year, if they plan to apply for admission to medical school immediately upon completion of their undergraduate degree. To be competitive for medical school, students must have a very high (3.5 or higher) GPA--both overall and in major/pre-med courses specifically.

Students in the Psych Pre-Med concentration will be assigned a regular advisor, but pre-med advising will be supervised by Dr. Amy Brown in Girard 214 (amy.brown@louisiana.edu). You are not required to meet with Dr. Brown, but are encouraged to if you have questions about the pre-med concentration that your primary advisor isn't sure about.

Students who are interested in pursuing gradaute training in allied health feilds (Physicians Assistant, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy) do not need to follow the pre-med curriculum, but should be advised by Dr. Brown as soon as they begin to consider those options. Allied health programs do have special pre-requisites that will not be met by following the standard psychology major curriculum.\

Pre-med students are strongly encouraged to join the pre-professional society.
